Justifying the J’s with Just a Closer Walk with Me
by Carol S. Helms, RScP
I love a good old gospel song, and a favorite is Just a Closer Walk with Thee in the style of Ann Murray. I also love a particular spiritual practice I that has become my serenity and sanity go to- walking prayer and meditation multiple times every day, so much so that now, rather than being reserved for “walking” time, the practice has become a spiritual muscle memory that kicks in as regularly as breathing.
A simple spiritual practice of walking and talking with God has become a constant recognition that all God is, I am; that where God is, I am; and it is in this oneness with God within that the old gospel favorite has shifted from beseeching a just closer walk with Thee, to knowing, and falling in step with, just a closer walk with me. And as I know the Truth and Peace of walking and talking with God in me, in our oneness, I know that Truth and Peace for each of us, all of us, without exception.
How good is to know that I never walk alone. How good is it to know that God is literally closer than ear-shot. How good is it to know that conversations with God require no appointment, no waiting, no beseeching and no restrictions on time or frequency of the connection. What a genius creation by the Genius, Generous Creator.
I am so grateful for direct access to that which created me, you, everything and everyone. And I am so grateful for conversations with God that unfold in perfection every time I take a walk. And the more I walk and talk with my Beloved Creator, the more I see and hear the Beloved Creator in you. And so it is; and so I am; and so we are!
