Life is a Mirror
by Nancy R Bowers, RScP

“Life is a mirror and will reflect back to the thinker what he thinks into it.”― Ernest Holmes
“I am a lover of what is, not because I’m a spiritual person, but because it hurts when I argue with reality.” ― Byron Katie
“As long as you think that the cause of your problem is “out there”—as long as you think that anyone or anything is responsible for your suffering—the situation is hopeless. It means that you are forever in the role of victim, that you’re suffering in paradise.” ― Byron Katie, Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life
It is easy to look around and feel dissatisfied with the state of the world. The appearance of what is does not always match my notion of how I think things should be. Thus, why I am so grateful for my spiritual community, for being a Practitioner, for facilitating A Course in Miracles group each week – the constant saturation in spiritual principles helps me to notice the stories my mind is making up; how it is resisting what is.
I’d love to blame someone, but I know better.
I remind myself, life is a mirror. It cannot reflect back to me anything other than what I put into it. When I smile, life smiles. When I frown, it frowns back at me and then I stop enjoying myself.
So I return to prayer: God is; I am what God is; therefore nothing can be wrong. It is only my judgment that stops me from recognizing the goodness. I pause. I do some parasympathetic breathing. I sing:
There’s only one life, that life is God’s life, that life is perfect, that life is my life now.
Here in the stillness, I notice what is. I notice the beauty. In the appreciation, I settle down into gratitude. There I find my center. The Universe knows shortcuts beyond my imagination, so I just surrender to it.
There, I let go. “I’m giving it to you, God. Let me know if there is something you need me to do.”
I glance in the mirror. I smile. Life smiles back. And so it is. Amen.
